Amber 638@http://community.poppyswap.com/forum/
I'm not sure if this has already been said but be sure to only use deionized or distilled water. It has made a huge difference at the shop I work at where we make all kinds of herbal lotions and skin care items by hand. We also use grapefruit seed extract and wheat germ oil. I alway strealize pots and utinsils with rubbing alcohol first too just to be safe.

sheripie 636@http://community.poppyswap.com/forum/
The link Kiki posted above is loaded with info! I can't add anything except personal experience.

I won't use synthetics and try to avoid preservatives but use Tinosan in water formulations, which is not naturally occuring but made from natural ingredients= Silver Citrate and Citric acid. It's effective against bacteria, yeast and mold in very small amounts (0.1% - 0.3%, though I've seen it recommended to use in combo with Potassium Sorbate for added protection against yeast & mold).

I'm not aware of any negatives (no known adverse effects on human health and classified as 'not hazardous' under OSHA regulations) except that it should not be used by people who have silver allergies. The downside for me when researching it was all the animal testing that's been done on it, but I guess that's unavoidable in the world we live in....

I don't know if this will work for your idea Susan, but here's how I get around all this for gels:

I infuse purchased aloe vera gel with dried plant material. The aloe vera already has Potassium Sorbate, Citric Acid and Xanthan Gum added to preserve it. So as long as you don't introduce any water, you should be good to go!

:) sheri

Sheri Lee Pierce, Paradise City Herbal

smlowry 628@http://community.poppyswap.com/forum/
I have some recipe ideas for cosmetic gels swimming around in my head. I want to make them using strong herbal tea, but years ago when I tried this with my creams they molded too quickly. I thought that making an herby tea to use as the water component would be awesome so I made a nice blend of herbs and used distilled (not tap) water for the tea. The cream was great but didn't last long. So now I use hydrosols if I want more than just plain distilled water. However the gels I have in mind would be made from specific wild-harvested herbs (like sweet fern, for example). I'm not sure that grapefruit seed extract alone is a strong enough preservative to prevent mold in this case, and I'm reluctant to use anything much stronger, unless someone knows of a safe, natural, unlikely-to-cause-skin-irritations/allergic reactions preservative. The sweet fern idea is because it's practically a miracle cure for poison ivy and I'd like to offer the gel as a product for sale. So it has to have a decent shelf life and not need refrigeration. Any suggestions?
