Meadow Walker 2439@http://community.poppyswap.com/forum/
Hello friends and fellow members at Poppy Swap,

I'm waiting for Azul to set up the store, but I thought in the meantime, I would discuss my herb business, the success and failures. They come and go. First, let me say this- you have to love this business, put your whole heart in it, expect disappointment, you have to love herbs, love what you're doing. It's a lot like raising a child- you give your all, and then you have to let go. Same with the herb business.

I don't mind discussing my business. It's culinary. That's what I sell. I work the farmer and green markets during the spring and summer months. In my area we cannot sell dried herbs for tea or herbal cosmetics, anything taken internal. I can sell fresh bouquets of herbs, herb plants and any crafts made from herbs.

Because I am an herbalist and certified master gardener, I know a great deal about guidelines insofar as labeling and what the FDA guidelines are. I would like to expand the business, but I must stay within the regulations of my state.

I want to encourage everyone to do what they do best. If it's cosmetics, then research this completely. If it's culinary, and you wish to make teas and speciality items, contact a health department and ask about certification to produce the products.

We all operate within the rules and regulations for our own benefit and the safety and well being of our customers.

Herbs are a passion with us, and I encourage each of you to hold onto this. This community is a wonderful forum, and I can feel the love and commitment from each of you. Find your place in the herb business and do your best. And never let go of your dreams.

Blessings to all,

Meadow

I used this all summer with good results, kept my face from burning from long hours working in the garden. I still have about half a tube left for fall & winter! It has zinc oxide, as Kristie mentioned above, I had no ill effects, but I do wonder if I should use it every day? Titanium dioxide burns my skin imediately, and most natural sunscreen have that, too.

Anyway, I really just want to recommend this as both a sunscreen and moisturizer. Fits in my pocket so I can take it with...smells great, too and feels nice on my face. good4you is good4me aline

p.s. These nasturtium flowers are my sunglowiest yellow, and part of the nasturtium mix we sell here. Sold out for now but returning soon as the fresh batch is drying in the seed room right now!

RosemaryandRue 962@http://community.poppyswap.com/forum/
Does anyone use Shea Butter when making creams? I use an ample amount in one of the salves I make and its consistency is thick and hard (due to the beeswax) and not like a cream at all, but I loooovvvee the texture and feel of Shea Butter! These are awesome recipes ;) I've actually never made creams of any sort (I, too, am a salve kind of girl) but I think I would like to try my hand at some. Does anyone know of a resource for basic cream recipes, as well?

Michelle Czolba 841@http://community.poppyswap.com/forum/
I also like to use other oils for creams, particularly sweet almond, jojoba, coconut, pomegranate (precious oil), rose hip seed, apricot kernel. It depends for what skin type what I'm formulating. I make an olive oil cream which is mostly herbal-infused olive oil but add coconut oil to that too. And then the water phase I also like to get creative, using flower waters, like rose, lavender, rose geranium, patchouli, and green tea extract too.

One thing to consider with creams is preservation since you are adding water. With salves, oxidation is a concern but I've rarely had an issue with that. Water-based products can be a breeding ground for bacteria and such (though I've rarely had a problem there either!). Oh, and separation. It's definitely one of the trickiest products to make, hence why people use all sorts of synthetics to bind and preserve. It's not necessary though :)

Their sale are listed on the website or you can sign up for their weekly sale email notifications. They have four different types of coconut oil and a handy comparison chart and the sizes range from 16 ounces to 5 gallons, so there's a wide range available. I've bought several different brands, and Tropical Traditions is really high quality.

CedarMountainHerbSchool 722@http://community.poppyswap.com/forum/
Here is an easy cream recipe:

Group 1:

2/3 cup Aloe Juice - OR - Herbal Witch Hazel

10 drops Essential Oil of your choice

Group 2:

3/4 cup medicinal oil of your choice (think about the purpose of the cream. Antifungal? Stress relief? Moisturizing? Pain Relief? Anti Acne?) Make your medicinal oil to suit your needs in evoo, jojoba, etc.

1/3 cup Shea Butter

3/4 oz Beeswax

1 tsp. Rosemary extract or Grapefruit seed extract

Add Aloe Juice - OR - Herbal Witch Hazel and essential oils (Group 1) in a 1 cup pyrex measuring cup and set aside. Melt and place Group 2 in a 4 cup pyrex measuring cup, set aside to cool completely. I put it in the fridge until I can't feel any warmth. Warm oils tend to make for a difficult time when "creaming" with group 1.

While using a stick blender, slowly add Aloe juice - OR - Herbal Witch Hazel and essential oils to the cooled oils until the mixture is thick, creamy and completely incorporated. If the mix does not get creamy or are separating, it could be that the oils had not cooled enough. Let stand to cool more and blend with stick blender. Spoon or pour into jars. The cream will thicken more as it cools completely.

I do not use any preservatives (except for what the herbs and EOs bring naturally), or emulsifiers. Commonly used "natural" emulsifiers are borax and lecithin (made from soy). I used borax for a teeny while when making creams and then decided I was getting an oompa loompa feeling. Borax just doesn't seem to be what I want to be putting on my skin, since 60% of what I put on my skin goes right into my bloodstream. And I have no interest in using lecithin made with soy.

 Happy cream making!

smlowry 721@http://community.poppyswap.com/forum/
I use olive oil to make herb/flower oils that I then use in creams and salves. But my salves/creams also contain other oils for their various properties - extra healing, absorption, etc. If I'm using 6 ounces of oil, maybe 2 - 3 of that would be the herb/flower oil (the exception is for super healing salves that have several herb oils in them), then I'd have fun with others. I use: coconut, mango butter, apricot, sweet almond, rosehip seed, avocado, meadowfoam seed, jojoba, you get the idea. Oils like jojoba, rosehip seed, meadowfoam seed are quickly absorbed by the skin and just so luxurious they are worth the extra $. And since I make my creams/salves to sell, I want them to be very special and not at all greasy. For certain things I add a bit (usually no more than an ounce) of castor oil for when I want the cream/salve to have a nice "slip" - this is for butters or massage creams, not for creams that are used on the face.

Creams are made using a 50/50 blend of oils to waters and beaten with a blender like mayonaise. They can be tricky when you're starting out. The oils and waters (hydrosols, aloe vera, witch hazel, distilled water - not tap water!) need to be room temperature or a bit warmer and they must be the same temp as each other. Don't add cooler waters to warmer oils or vice versa. You pour the waters in slowly while the blender is going. A stick blender works better than a regular blender and I never use the blender or containers I make creams in for food or vice versa. There are many recipes for creams on line, but I first started many years ago using Rosemary Gladstars basic face cream recipe. You can use any oils you like, adding essential oils to the cooled oils before blending. And don't overdo the beeswax in either creams or salves. The exception is if you're making a lip balm - you need more beeswax so it's very firm.

Hope this helps! Good luck and have fun.

Susan

kiki 720@http://community.poppyswap.com/forum/
Hi Ladies!

I too am more of a salve maker than cream maker....and not much measuring happens in my house either!

A tip I picked up way back was to start shaving the beeswax into the hot salve and then take little dips in with a spoon. Put the spoon with a dollop of salve in the freezer and wait a couple of minutes and you will have a good little sample that will tell you how hard/thick your salve has become. You can add more beeswax or oil as needed to get the consistency you want.

I hope that's helpful Stephanie! I also put your question up on the facebook page to see if we get some new ideas!

xo Kiki

anchasta 719@http://community.poppyswap.com/forum/
Howdy! I made my salves with beeswax and coconut oil with a touch of olive oil. I like the smoothness of the olive oil, and the coconut oil keeps it softer and easier to absorb into the skin! :) If I were the measuring type, I'd share that info, but I just slop stuff in the pot and see what happens.

I've never done creams, so can't help you there. I'm sure someone else can, though!

DivineRemedies 717@http://community.poppyswap.com/forum/
Thank you VioletHerbs for bringing up this subject. This is why I came to PoppySwap...because I was looking for more information on how to grown my business. Part of this growth for me involves learning how I can legally run my business because I have a lot of business plans for the future. I wish more business owners responded to this post because it's so important! Admittedly I didn't think too much about the legalities when I first started but now after learning more about business I feel that it is important.

I contacted a herb business that manufactures their products close to where I live and was pretty much told that I needed to sell someone else's products and that I couldn't have a home based business. i was really discouraged and that was why I turned to PoppySwap and other Herbal community websites to get some help. Unfortunately I haven't gotten a lot of information this way either and find it really disappointing that we aren't talking about this.

One of my big issues has been labeling my products. At first I just put whatever not knowing really what i should be doing but now understand that the FDA does have labeling regulations that I should be following. From my understanding, any product that is to be applied to the skin and is external use is considered a "cosmetic" and the FDA has a whole section on their website about labeling for cosmetics.

For internal products (tinctures, extracts, syrups...etc..) these need to be labeled according to the FDA regulations for dietary supplements. included should be the words, "dietary supplement", as well as nutrition facts, and a FDA disclaimer...among the basic label information.

In addition to labeling, the whole GMP's seems daunting for me. I get my herbs from Mountain Rose Herbs and have been told by others that we can get the analysis certifications from the companies we purchase herbs from. Keep track of batches and having a numerical system to track all of this is another step in creating Good Manufacturing Practices that I feel are reasonable things I can do in my business. As far as testing the final batches - that's another story and one in which I don't know how a small home based business owner can afford.

Please share your insights, comments concerns ladies. This is a wonderful community that has much to offer and I wholeheartedly agree with everything VioletHerbs has talked about and hope you'll speak up on this important issue!!

bluecat2012 716@http://community.poppyswap.com/forum/
Greetings all,

I am hoping some of you can give me some insight. When making my salves, I generally use organic, cold pressed olive oil but I am finding that it is a tad greasy. Any ideas on how to correct this or maybe an alternative oil to use that will feel less greasy? Also, I would like to transform some of my salves into creams but I don't know where to start. Any guidance would be much appreciated. I look forward to joining you all soon as Poppy Swap store owners.

Bright blessings and happy healing,

Stephanie L.

greenjourney 693@http://community.poppyswap.com/forum/
Just a quick note here to say that Dragonfly Dew's face cream works great for me! It cleared up my sun/wind burn in the first week, and I've continued to use it several nights a week to keep my skin moisture balanced. I use a small amount, and one 1 oz. jar lasts 2-3 months! I like Kathy's feedback; "I'm happy your face loves my cream!"

I'm buying another jar for summer, and also the Grapefruit moisture bar. Thanks so much, Kathy!

Peace is growing,

Aline

smlowry 684@http://community.poppyswap.com/forum/
I've been meaning to comment on this topic for a while. While I have had a few sales on Poppy Swap, most of them were to folks I already know who live far enough away that anything would have to be mailed. I think one of the main issues is getting more traffic onto the website. I'm not very internet marketing savy and would much rather spend time outside in the garden or writing than figuring out marketing. I gave up on etsy because I sold nothing and have no idea how to compete with all the other folks selling creams and salves. Poppy Swap is a better site for me because everyone is committed to using the best, all-natural ingredients. No way can I compete with someone selling an "all natural" cream for less than $10.00. That said, my prices are quite low and sometimes I wonder if they are too low so people don't think the creams are all that good? But my products sell very well locally and people around here don't have a lot of money so if I raised my prices substantially I would outprice myself here. And I don't think it's fair to sell something here for $12.00 and price it at $25.00 online. Still, I have not yet factored in $ for my time, just the actual cost of ingredients, jar, label. Nor do I factor in the time I spend gardening the herbs/flowers that I use, or wild harvesting. I'd be doing it anyway, even if GGH didn't exist. At some point in the next 2-3 years I plan to quit my "day job" and hopefully by that time GGH will be doing well enough that it will make up for the loss of salary - I only work 2 days a week so that's not asking too much. I have recently started a blog and I am also on FB and GGH has a FB page too. But if it doesn't get shared around, then what can I do? I don't have hundreds of "friends" because I'm not on FB for the promotion, but rather for the connection to family, friends, and other herbalists and Earth lovers. So for now I'm focusing on my local market, and later this month another store will be adding my products to their health & beauty aid section. So that will be 3 health food stores and also a few other smaller outlets that just feature 3 or 4 products, not the whole line. On the other hand, the only place my tinctures are offered for sale is Poppy Swap, and from me personally of course. Honestly I was relieved to learn that others have the same concerns I do re: selling online so I don't feel so alone and inept. It's not just me! So I'll be checking back here every once in a while and keep my fingers crossed that things pick up. I, too, have been running a promotion that goes until the end of April and not one sale from it.

Susan
